Career Coach

What does a career coach do?
Well, theres no "short answer"...
The Career Coach position started out as a pilot program in 2012 and quickly gained popularity with the Alabama State Department of Education as well as Business and Industry Leaders. Today Alabama high schools are equipped with more than 78 Career Coaches and adding more each year!
Career Coaches do a little bit of everything based on the need of each school. To list just a few of the things I assist with: college search and applications, career search, military, FAFSA, scholarships, technical training, credentials, getting jobs, graduation requirements, soft skills, mock interviews, resume's & cover letters, interest inventories, personality testing, career technical programs, student organizations, leadership opportunities, GPA, community service, programs of study, college majors, ACT and more! The job description is broad but our goal is simple; preparing high school students to be college and/or career ready by the time they graduate high school.

When will my Career Coach be at my school?
I work with 3 different systems and have 5 different schools so I manage my time by going to 1 school each day of the week. Below is my regular schedule however, from time to time it may change due to activities. I am there 7:30am-3:30pm usually. Parent nights, open house or other after school activities may change my schedule.
Mondays : Thomasville High School
Tuesdays : Clarke County High School
Wednesdays : Jackson High School
Thursdays : Choctaw County High School
Fridays : Southern Choctaw High School

How do I select a Career Pathway for my schedule?
All students have access to the Alabama Career Planning System (Kuder) to create their education plan beginning in the 8th grade with their middle school counselors. These plans are used to create the students schedules for the 9th-12th grades. These plans are updated in the 9th and 11th grades with the Career Coach but students may log in at any time and update or make changes to their education plans.
To choose a particular Career Pathway a student must meet any course requirements such as GPA, prerequisites or recommendations as posed by the instructor. To request these courses, the student should add them to their education plan in the Career Technical Elective section in proper sequence.
-
Can I choose more than one Career Pathway?
If a student would like to receive the CTE Endorsement on their Diploma they must complete at least 3 courses in that particular pathway in sequence.
Depending on scheduling availability and graduation requirements a student may participate in more than one CTE program. After taking the introduction class of each pathway the sequence may vary in order to accommodate students desiring to pursue more than one pathway.
